Sludge Recovery Technology

Sludge Recovery Technology

Petroleum sludge (oily sludge) is one of the primary waste products of petroleum industry which is produced in oil wells and oil fields, piping and bunkering washing and maintenance and also in refining section. The usual rate of sludge production is equal to 1.5% to 2.5% of net crude oil extraction and production and it depends on the complexity of the whole oil industry of each country. Oil industry produces over than 80 million tonnes of petroleum sludge annually. And we have an incredibly terrifying amount of over 1 billion tonnes of accumulated sludge all over the world.

The current methods for treating sludge is not effective and feasible. Usually they dump it in environment or stash it under the ground. Sometimes the separation technologies come to help and separate hydrocarbons, clay and water, which is very costly. And also other methods are not a long time solution to this problem. That’s the reason of petroleum sludge problem to be a major treat to oil industry and our environment. This is a very dangerous and costly problem which we can’t ignore any longer.

KGM R&D team is focused to make profitable products from costly problems. So they developed a unique technology to produce fuel oil from petroleum sludge. Our catalysts and designed technology help us to simply separate clay content and then, chemically combining water content with hydrocarbons. It is possible for our hi-tech catalysts to break water molecules into hydrocarbon chains. The whole process is a simple mixing process which can be done by general equipment and a simple design.

The quality and specification of produced fuel oil is completely depended on the water and clay content of feed sludge. But we usually suggest to consider sludge with water content between 30% to 50% as feed. Sludges with more water content than 50% is possible to handle with this technology, but requires special design, optimization and side process (example: fuel oil feed to achieve the right analyze of final product) to obtain desired results.

This technology also can be used for fuel oil and crude oil with water content.
